This gallery is dedicated to the things that happen every day in my home, Colorado. Without a camera to record them, they fade anonymously with the end of each day. This isn't a bad thing-but this gallery is my attempt to remember some of these things.

This collection is persistently updated to keep it fresh. At some point a photo may seem to work, then at some later point it may be realized it didn't work quite as well as I'd hoped.

This gallery is an exercise in the mechanical aspects of photography-learning the cameras, characteristics of film, a particular sensor's traits, the sweet spot of a lens, etc. And of course the aesthetic aspects-composition, exposure and light. It also attempts to explore the intangibles-the emotion, the moment and the feeling behind a person or place that's fleeting.

I hope you enjoy this ever changing collection of images.
-John B. Crane

Yes, each year brings more people, crime, pollution etc. The good news is, however, you can still escape it fairly easily. This trip proves it.

In early July 2007 we took a 4-day camping trip in our 1992 Coleman pop-up to the spot on the map where they put the compass. What we found there was stunning.

I hope you enjoy viewing these images half as much as we did discovering them.

From there, we sailed up Alaska's Inside Passage to the Norwegian fishing hamlet of Petersburg Alaska, where we settled in for the summer and worked the salmon.

It was a summer of travel and adventure, and something I'd dreamt about my whole life. I read poetry by Robert Service, stories of wilderness travel by John Muir, and dreamt of living an atypical lifestyle. By the end of a very wet, cold summer I was ready to return to the semi-arid warmth of my beloved Rocky Mountains and headed home.

These photos are nearly 25 years old at this posting, all shot with my Canon AT-1 35mm film camera.

The ever-present question: do you wait the few hours until the light begins to melt the day, or do you mark it in your notebook as a place to visit again someday when you have time to shoot it properly?

This collection is an attempt to show some of my favorite sun rise and sun down shots, where the light of the day is at its very best and you seize the moment and try to bring it home with you. Please enjoy.
